Things to Know About NFLPA’s 2019 In-Season Top 50 Player Sales List

Patrick Mahomes has moved into the No. 1 position on the NFLPA’s official list of top selling players, based on sales of all officially licensed NFL player-identified merchandise from March 1-November 30, 2019. Mahomes is now in position to become this season’s new pro football retail king when the final NFLPA Top 50 Player Sales list is released in April. Tom Brady has finished each of the past two seasons as the top player on the list, and currently sits at No. 2.

The NFLPA Top 50 Player Sales List, which reports sales of all officially licensed NFL player-identified merchandise, is compiled using the most up-to-date, comprehensive figures currently available. Mahomes ranked second in the NFLPA’s preseason rankings, but the third-year quarterback surged ahead during the 2019 season as a result of his performance on and off the field.

Brady’s sustained dominance of the NFLPA Top Player Sales list includes not only two times as year-end leader, but also a record 17 straight appearances in the top three since the NFLPA introduced the list in 2014 – and he has never ranked outside the top nine. Lamar Jackson has quickly ascended, going from No. 41 heading into the season to No. 12 on the current list and knocking on the door to a year-end finish among the top 10.

The NFLPA Top Player Sales list is the only verified ranking of all officially licensed, NFL player-identified merchandise sold from online and traditional retail outlets as reported by more than 75 NFLPA licensees, such as Fanatics, Outerstuff, Nike, Fathead, FOCO, Funko, Wincraft, and more. NFLPA-licensed product categories include video games; men’s, women’s and youth game jerseys; T-shirts and hoodies; backpacks; wall decals; pennants; collectible figurines; matted and framed photos; bobbleheads; plush; drinkware; and pet products, among others. NFLPA licensees have generated record retail sales in each of the last five years, exceeding $1.6 billion during the 2018 season.

Below are highlights from the latest rankings, including sales results during the 2019 football season:

• Four players saw big leaps in sales from the preseason list to in-season rankings; Amari Cooper jumped 19 spots (No. 49 to No. 30), Leighton Vander Esch 17 spots (No. 35 to No. 18), Lamar Jackson 14 spots (No. 26 to No. 12) and Davante Adams 11 spots (No. 44 to No. 33).
  
• Four rookies appeared in the Top 50, led by Daniel Jones (No. 27), Nick Bosa (No. 29), Josh Jacobs (No. 37) and Gardner Minshew (No. 42).
  
• Top five jersey sales combined from adidas, DCM, Fanatics, Nike and Under Armour featured Ezekiel Elliott, Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Baker Mayfield and Dak Prescott.
  
• Jacobs and Jones debuted on the list, jumping from the 2019 NFLPA Rising Stars List to the overall Top 50 list. Rising Stars rankings reflect on-field performances, early demand from partners, fantasy league popularity and new faces in strong markets as factors for sales popularity analysis.
  
• Among sales of collegiate co-branded jerseys from Under Armour, Mahomes’ Texas Tech jersey led all players for a second straight season while J.J. Watt’s Wisconsin jersey was runner-up.
  
• Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers and Brady spread the most aloha as top sellers of Shinesty’s newly licensed Hawaiian style shirts.
  
• Brady, Mahomes, Saquon Barkley, Mayfield and Rodgers were the five best selling Funko vinyl figurines.
  
• Mahomes performed at the highest rate for Kansas City-based Hallmark, selling three times more product than the next player, JuJu Smith-Schuster, with Zach Ertz third in sales.
• Five quarterbacks were favorites among pet owners, as Pets First listed Brady, Rodgers, Carson Wentz, Mahomes and Prescott as its top performers in pet accessories and apparel.
  
• Mahomes, Mayfield, Rodgers, Smith-Schuster and Brady led sales of all aprons by Party Animal.
  
• Top five players in youth apparel from Outerstuff included Mahomes, Brady, Odell Beckham Jr., Mayfield and Khalil Mack.
  
• The top five player bobbleheads made by FOCO featured Mayfield, Brady, Mahomes, Beckham Jr. and Barkley.
  
• Rodgers and Mahomes were top sellers of framed memorabilia from Highland Mint.
  
• Mayfield sold the most Chalk Line jackets with Brady and Barkley close behind.
