WHOOP x NFLPA
Optimizing Player Performance - Together
A shared vision for player wellness
When WHOOP and the NFLPA came together, the goal was simple but ambitious: give players a deeper understanding of their bodies and the tools to perform, recover and live better.
What followed was more than a partnership. It was an early bet on the future of performance, the power of data and player-led innovation.
Through NFL Players Inc., the NFLPA aligned with WHOOP at a pivotal moment in the company’s growth, helping bring wearable performance technology into players’ daily lives while advancing its mission around health, safety and long-term wellbeing.
WHY IT MATTERS NOW
For years, performance in football was measured by what happened on the field, through strength, speed, statistics, and gameday results. But performance is shaped just as much in the other 20+ hours. Sleep, recovery, strain, and stress represent the unseen work that ultimately determines how a player shows up when it matters most.
At the same time, the game has evolved:
- Athletes are taking a more holistic approach to health, using technology to extend careers and improve life beyond football
- Data has become a critical asset, with players seeking greater ownership and understanding of their own information
- Health and safety conversations are increasingly driven by real insight, not assumption
WHOOP sits at the center of that shift, turning continuous biometric data into clear, actionable feedback.
This partnership reflects a new reality. Players are not just participants. They are informed decision-makers optimizing their health and performance through data.
THE CHALLENGE
The NFLPA set out to close a critical gap:
- Deliver meaningful, real-time insight into player health beyond training and games
- Ensure players have ownership and control of their personal performance data
- Leverage aggregated insights to inform conversations around workload, recovery and safety
For WHOOP, the challenge was equally important:
- Shift athlete mindset from training-only to full-cycle performance, including recovery
- Prove the value of understanding what happens off the field
- Earn verifiable trust around data usage, privacy and long-term benefit
This was not just about introducing new tech to players. It was about changing how they think and how they prepare.
THE BREAKTHROUGH
The relationship began at NFLPA Pitch Day in 2017, when WHOOP was still emerging but its vision was clear.
We were starting to think about how we empower our players to really articulate what we know they’re feeling—needing more recovery and more control over their bodies to perform at their best.
Recognizing the broader commercial potential of the technology and its strong alignment with player needs, the NFLPA designed a strategic partnership with WHOOP, becoming both a key partner and equity investor. As part of the collaboration, WHOOP introduced comprehensive discount programs for active and former players, driving authentic adoption and deeper engagement throughout the league.
Players gained a new lens on performance through the ability to monitor what their bodies were doing throughout the day. Sleep became measurable, recovery actionable, and strain manageable.
With early adoption from players like Patrick Mahomes, WHOOP quickly became part of daily routines.
Looking at my WHOOP every day and knowing what I did the day prior and how it helped my recovery is something I've gotten better at. It's about finding the right balance of having fun and living life while staying focused on taking care of your body.
THE IMPACT
The partnership delivered value across performance, player advocacy, and long-term positioning.
WHOOP expanded how players approach performance by bringing visibility to recovery, sleep, and daily strain, giving them a clearer understanding of how to prepare and sustain themselves over time.
The NFLPA strengthened its role as an advocate in a more data-driven environment, enabling wide-scale access to WHOOP’s products for its player members and ensuring players retain full ownership of their data.
This partnership enabled NFLPA to merge two important priorities, establishing a model for how player organizations can partner with emerging companies to drive meaningful impact while generating long-term commercial value.
